** WATCH Weekly Report 01-07-26 **
------------------------------------------------------------
To the WATCH Board, Judges, and Alternates:
Since I heard from many of you over the years that it is helpful, I am
continuing the “tip of the week” this year. This section will cover
mistakes or issues we see during the balloting or tabulation process, or
just reminders that we think will be helpful. The tips may look very
familiar to returning judges, but it does not hurt to review each week.
But first, as a general rule, if there is ever any hesitation on your part about what an element contains, re-read or re-watch that part of the training again.
Looking at it another way, if there's anything you can't explain to a
friend, you may need to brush up on that element. There is actually a
link in the ballot for each element which will take you to the training
for that specific element.
TIP OF THE WEEK: One of the most important
tenets of WATCH judging is to “stay true to your ‘5’”. When judging,
the first thing you need to do is figure out what you consider to be
“average” in community theater for each element. So basically, every
score starts at a ‘5’ and then you adjust up or down based on how the
element compares to the average community theater production on that
element. It is crucial that you go into your first judging assignment
of the year with the understanding of what that average means to you,
and keep that average the same across the year. Do not
adjust your scoring because you thought you were too easy or too hard
at the start of the year. We want consistent judging across the year.
