** WATCH Weekly Report 01-08-25 **
------------------------------------------------------------
To the WATCH Board, Judges, and Alternates:
Please note: there
is no confirmation form for training on the website, as those of you who
read last week’s report may have read about. This was left over from a
previous year’s report which I used as a template for this year.
Please just let your rep know once you have completed training.
Since I heard from many of you that it was helpful, I am bringing back
the “tip of the week” this year. This section will cover mistakes or
issues we see during the balloting or tabulation process, or just
reminders that we think will be helpful. The tips may look very
familiar to returning judges, but it does not hurt to review each week.
But first, as a general rule, if there is ever any hesitation on your part about what an element contains, re-read or re-watch that part of the training again.
Looking at it another way, if there's anything you can't explain to a
friend, you may need to brush up on that element. There is actually a
link in the ballot for each element which will take you to the training
for that specific element.
Also, since I get this question from new judges every year, if you were
assigned a show, but your name disappears from the weekly report, this
is probably because I have removed your name from the report after
receiving the ballot confirmation from Margaret.
Conversely, if your name still appears, but you sent in your ballot, it
probably means I have not received the conformation from Margaret (which
is the only way I know it has been received). If you received that
confirmation email, just forward it to me and I will take you off the
list. If you did not receive it, it probably means that Margaret did
not receive it. Check in with us, but you may need to resubmit, which
is one of several reasons we always suggest you keep a copy of your
scores once you’ve submitted them. Please also note that this is a
manual system which requires Margaret to check for ballots, so it may be
several days between when you submit and when you receive her
confirmation.
And now for the star of the show …
TIP OF THE WEEK: One of the most important
tenets of WATCH judging is to “stay true to your ‘5’”. When judging,
the first thing you need to do is figure out what you consider to be
“average” in community theater for each element. So basically, every
score starts at a ‘5’ and then you adjust up or down based on how the
element compares to the average community theater production on that
element. It is crucial that you go into your first judging assignment
of the year with the understanding of what that average means to you,
and keep that average the same across the year. Do not
adjust your scoring because you thought you were too easy or too hard
at the start of the year. We want consistent judging across the year.
