WATCH Weekly Report 11-07-18

** WATCH Weekly Report 11-07-18 **
------------------------------------------------------------
To the WATCH Board, Judges, and Alternates:

I think it is time for a refresher on some balloting procedures as we wrap up this year and get ready for the next.

I have been seeing a lot of notes from Margaret lately on the ballot confirmations about judges forgetting to include their score for Ensemble.  Remember, if you see 4 actors on the stage at any point during the show, you need to include a score for Ensemble on the ballot.  It does not matter whether or not there is an “Ensemble” listed in the program, or whether you have already given each individual actor their own score, or how many actors appear on stage at the same time, or if the production is a play or a musical.  The Ensemble score is meant for the entire cast of actors to score how they work together. So, in summary, 4 or more actors on stage in the show = an Ensemble score on the ballot.  Always.

If you feel a need for a refresher, below is a link to the portion of the WATCH website where you can find the video that was made explaining the category at the beginning of this year.  There are also training presentation slides on the website.  This presentation has been updated with information about the Ensemble Award as well (see slides 67 – 69).

Also, there have been shows recently where there was cross-gender casting, and some judges asked which gender they should use.  It is always the gender of the actor, regardless of the gender of the character they are playing.

Finally, please remember to include a score for every technical element on your ballot, even if it is not listed in the playbill.  We are working with the reps and theaters to try to improve their playbills, but currently things get left out of some playbills.  This does not mean you don’t need to give it a score, but rather you need to check the “Not Listed” box on the ballot next to that element and then enter a score.  This is relatively easy with categories like costumes and makeup, where every show will have these (at least I hope no shows are sending actors out naked and pale).  But categories like special effects and combat choreography can sometimes be hard to identify.  So it is better to err on the side of caution – if you see something that might be in one of these categories, give it a score.  If enough other judges agree that they were present, then your score will be included.  And presumably you will take level of difficulty into account, so if these are really minimal, your scores will reflect that.

OK, sorry for the long preamble.  But hopefully some of you found it helpful.  (I’m not as concerned about whether anyone found it interesting. ;))

*****************************************
NOTE:  Balloting for a show closes 30 days after the show closes.  If you owe us a ballot, please get it in as soon as possible.

Friendly Reminders:

1.      DO NOT REPLY TO THIS EMAIL.  It’s very long, and the reply will include the entire thing, clogging my inbox.  Please send a new email to adjudication@washingtontheater.org
2.      DO email me your reservation dates.  Really, I want to know!
3.      DO search this entire report for your name, including in the “Closed” section to see if you owe any ballots.
4.      If you go see a show that you were not assigned to see, please let me know in case we need an alternate.  Try to keep the playbills for all shows you see at WATCH company theaters, at least until you see that it has closed with all ballots received.  Similarly, if you see a note that an alternate is needed and you are available to see that show, please let me know.
