WATCH Weekly Report 07-31-24

 ** WATCH Weekly Report 07-31-24 **
------------------------------------------------------------
To the WATCH Board, Judges, and Alternates:

TIP OF THE WEEK: Sometimes productions list members of the Ensemble along with specific character names in the cast list in the program.  In this case, you would list all the character names on the ballot, eliminating the “Ensemble”, and provide a score just for the non-Ensemble roles.  For example, for a character listing of “Ensemble/Joe Smith/Bob Jones”, you would list “Joe Smith/Bob Jones” on the ballot and give a score just for those roles.

NOTE:  Balloting for a show closes 30 days after the show closes.  If you owe us a ballot, please get it in as soon as possible.

Friendly Reminders:

  2. DO email me your reservation dates. Really, I want to know!
  3. DO search this entire report for your name, including in the “Closed” section to see if you owe any ballots.
  4. If you go see a show that you were not assigned to see, please let me know in case we need an alternate. Try to keep the playbills for all shows you see at WATCH company theaters, at least until you see that it has closed with all ballots received. Similarly, if you see a note that an alternate is needed and you are available to see that show, please let me know.

WATCH Weekly Report 07-24-24

 ** WATCH Weekly Report 07-24-24 **
------------------------------------------------------------
To the WATCH Board, Judges, and Alternates:

TIP OF THE WEEK: There seems to be a bit of confusion about what constitutes a cameo role.  A cameo role is a character that appears one time or has very limited stage time, but in one scene they are momentarily the main character or the center of focus and have a memorable moment. If the show is a musical, this character will usually have a song/production number, while in a play they will likely steal the scene or have a long monologue.  This is not just a smaller role where a character has a few lines (or none at all) but is never the central focus of a scene.  Some classic examples of cameos would be Fruma-Sarah in “Fiddler on the Roof”, The Messenger in “1776”, King Herod in “Jesus Christ Superstar”, the Major General in “Pirates of Penzance”, Lawrence in “Calendar Girls”, the Grand Duchess in “You Can’t Take It With You” and Karl Lindner in “Raisin in the Sun”.  If a character does not meet the definition of a cameo as described, they should be scored as Featured.

Also please remember that if you are ever confused about how to score something, the training materials on the WATCH website are a good resource (link is provided every week in the “Useful Links” section below).  As an example, on slide 15 of the PowerPoint training presentation, there are definitions of each type of role if you feel like you need a refresher.

WATCH Weekly Report 07-17-24

 ** WATCH Weekly Report 07-17-24 **
------------------------------------------------------------
To the WATCH Board, Judges, and Alternates:

The below tip is a repeat, but Margaret has been seeing numerous errors relating to this lately, so it warrants repeating.  Please read this carefully and be sure you understand the procedure.

TIP OF THE WEEK: Many shows have one actor playing multiple roles.  When filling out the ballot, the rule is to follow the program to determine how to list and score these roles:

  • If an actor is playing more than one character and all of the characters are listed together in the program, then list them that way on the ballot with one score
  • If an actor is playing multiple characters and each of those characters is listed separately in the program, then list the characters separately on the ballot and give that actor a separate score for each one

******************************************
NOTE:  Balloting for a show closes 30 days after the show closes.  If you owe us a ballot, please get it in as soon as possible.

Friendly Reminders:
  1. DO NOT REPLY TO THIS EMAIL. It’s very long, and the reply will include the entire thing. Please send a new email to watchadjudication@gmail.com

Directions to performance space(s): From Points North - "How would you get to Reagan National Airport?" That's the first question to answer. Once you've gotten onto the GW Parkway and passed the airport on your left, continue heading south. The Parkway becomes Washington Street as you enter the city of Alexandria. Cross King Street and take the third left after King onto Wolfe Street. You will find LTA on the right hand side of the street, at the corner of Wolfe and St. Asaph streets.
From The Capital Beltway - take the exit for Route 1 North. As you exit on the ramp, you'll drive onto Route 1 and get in the right lane immediately. Take the first right, onto Franklin St. At the light, make a left onto Washington Street. Pass two lights and make a right onto Wolfe St. LTA is at the corner of Wolfe and St. Asaph streets.
Parking - Parking is on the street. Watch posted signs, as some areas have two hour parking limitations and some require payment. The Capital One Bank on the corner of Wilkes and Washington streets lets our patrons park in their lot when the bank is closed. Please note The Capital One Bank has extended their hours to include evening and weekend hours. Please make sure not to use their parking lot when they are open.
There are several garages within walking distance - one is on Washington Street, near King, and there are several on Pitt, near King. Look for the "Public Parking" signs.
One handicap accessible parking space is located on St Asaph Street next to LTA’s courtyard.

WATCH Weekly Report 07-10-24

 ** WATCH Weekly Report 07-10-24 **
------------------------------------------------------------
To the WATCH Board, Judges, and Alternates:

TIP OF THE WEEK:  When filling out your ballot, please enter everything exactly as it appears in the program.  The reason we make such a big deal about following the order of the program when listing the cast is that it makes it much easier for Margaret to merge the data from different judges scoring the same show.  The same goes for the way things are spelled and even the capitalization used.  DO use initial caps as they appear in the program.  DO use the correct spelling of actors/crew members names.  DO include the full and correct name of the show.  DO NOT use all caps when filling out your ballot.

******************************************
NOTE:  Balloting for a show closes 30 days after the show closes.  If you owe us a ballot, please get it in as soon as possible.

Friendly Reminders:

  1. DO NOT REPLY TO THIS EMAIL. It’s very long, and the reply will include the entire thing. Please send a new email to watchadjudication@gmail.com
