WATCH Weekly Report 07-30-25

 ** WATCH Weekly Report 07-30-25 **
------------------------------------------------------------
To the WATCH Board, Judges, and Alternates:

We are still in need of an alternate ballot for a closed show and also an alternate for a show closing this weekend.  If you saw either production and can fill out a ballot, or if you are available to see the closing show this weekend, please let me know as soon as possible.

Also, it appears that there may be an issue with the balloting system.  Several judges have told us they submitted ballots in the past few days that Margaret has not received.  If you see your name in the report for a ballot you have sent in and you do not see a “ballot sent” listed next to it, please send me an email to let me know so I can pass this along to our ballot designer.  And I will try to send out a message to everyone once we believe the issue is resolved so you can resume submitting ballots.

TIP OF THE WEEK: This is the time of year when I start to get emails about overlapping assignments, and I respond with an explanation on how scheduling works.  So, I figured I’d use this space to explain it to everyone and hopefully get ahead of it.  Apologies in advance for the long explanation.

The schedule for the WATCH year is created in November/December of the previous year (i.e. 2024 for the 2025 adjudication year).  Because WATCH runs on a calendar year, while most theaters’ schedules run across the years (but not necessarily in a consistent way), most theaters do not have a full schedule in place for the next calendar year.  Therefore we ask them to submit their best idea of what their year will look like, including the number of shows they will produce in the year.  For the unknown shows, we ask them to submit the approximate time frame for the production, with the understanding that there may be changes over the year.  Our matrix creator then takes this information and creates the matrix with the information we have at that time, doing everything in his power to avoid any shows in the same time period.  However, there are changes during the year, with shows being replaced, moved to another time or cancelled altogether.  So the schedule you get at the beginning of the year is just a placeholder, and it might (or probably will) change.  The only true constriction we put on theaters is the maximum number of shows they produce in the year, as we cannot add assignments to the matrix once it is created.  In essence, what the theaters are submitting for is production slots, as opposed to exact production time periods.  So if you find yourself with multiple shows to adjudicate in one time period, chances are that at least one of the shows has moved time slots and was originally supposed to be produced at a non-conflicting time.  And if you cannot attend all of the show assigned to you in this time slot, this is an excellent time to reach out to your rep and ask them to find you an alternate.

******************************************
NOTE: Balloting for a show closes 30 days after the show closes.  If you owe us a ballot, please get it in as soon as possible.

Friendly Reminders:

  1. DO NOT REPLY TO THIS EMAIL. It’s very long, and the reply will include the entire thing. Please send a new email to watchadjudication@gmail.com
  2. DO email me your reservation dates. Really, I want to know!
  3. DO search this entire report for your name, including in the “Closed” section to see if you owe any ballots.
  4. If you go see a show that you were not assigned to see, please let me know in case we need an alternate. Try to keep the playbills for all shows you see at WATCH company theaters, at least until you see that it has closed with all ballots received. Similarly, if you see a note that an alternate is needed and you are available to see that show, please let me know.

WATCH Weekly Report 07-23-25

 ** WATCH Weekly Report 07-23-25 **
------------------------------------------------------------
To the WATCH Board, Judges, and Alternates:

Due to several rained out performances, we are in need of at least one alternate ballot for “The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas” at ASGT.  If you saw this production before it closed and can fill out a ballot, please let me know as soon as possible.

TIP OF THE WEEK: Please make sure you stay for the entire performance.  Sometimes things happen later in the show that can impact your scoring, including (but not limited to) a pivotal scene for a character or even a character that does not show up until late in the show. Plus, it is really important to see a character's entire development before scoring them, not to mention technical elements that change throughout the show. If you have an emergency and have to leave, by all means, please do. But you will be required to go back and see the rest of the show, or find an alternate to see the entire show before a ballot can be submitted. And yes, theaters are fully aware of who the WATCH judges are at each performance, they do notice when judges leave early, and they are not shy about contacting me to let me know. (OK, no so much a tip as a directive, but still important to know.)

Once you've gotten onto the GW Parkway and passed the airport on your left, continue heading south. The Parkway becomes Washington Street as you enter the city of Alexandria. Cross King Street and take the third left after King onto Wolfe Street. You will find LTA on the right hand side of the street, at the corner of Wolfe and St. Asaph streets.

From The Capital Beltway - take the exit for Route 1 North. As you exit on the ramp, you'll drive onto Route 1 and get in the right lane immediately. Take the first right, onto Franklin St. At the light, make a left onto Washington Street. Pass two lights and make a right onto Wolfe St. LTA is at the corner of Wolfe and St. Asaph streets.

Parking - Parking is on the street. Watch posted signs, as some areas have two hour parking limitations and some require payment. The Capital One Bank on the corner of Wilkes and Washington streets lets our patrons park in their lot when the bank is closed. Please note The Capital One Bank has extended their hours to include evening and weekend hours. Please make sure not to use their parking lot when they are open.
There are several garages within walking distance - one is on Washington Street, near King, and there are several on Pitt, near King. Look for the "Public Parking" signs.

WATCH Weekly Report 07-16-25

 ** WATCH Weekly Report 07-16-25 **
------------------------------------------------------------
To the WATCH Board, Judges, and Alternates:

Please note: I just learned of another show opening next week.  So please make sure you review all sections of this report, and not just the most recently added shows assuming you know about the others.  (In theory, you should never assume you know what is in the rest of the report and should check for your name anywhere every week; but I wanted to mention this in case that is anyone’s MO.)

TIP OF THE WEEK: When you submit your ballot, it goes directly to Margaret.  I never see the ballot and the only way I know that it has been submitted is when I receive the ballot confirmation that is also sent to you and your theater’s rep.  So if you realize you need to make changes to your ballot after it is submitted (such as a skipped actor or forgotten tech score) or have any questions about your ballot, please email her directly as I will not be able to do anything with the information except forward it to her anyway.  Her email address appears in ever report as the 2nd entry under Useful Links.  You can either add it to your address book now or find it in a report when you need it.

Directions to performance space(s): From Points North - "How would you get to Reagan National Airport?" That's the first question to answer.

One handicap accessible parking space is located on St Asaph Street next to LTA’s courtyard.
